The San Francisco Bay Area’s notoriety for sluggishness when it comes to building new housing is not news to anyone following the current crisis of supply and demand — but where exactly it is most difficult to build might be.
The Business Times teamed up with San Francisco real estate data startup BuildZoom to take a look at the top 10 most problematic zip codes in the Bay Area for building housing.
There are multiple reasons that the Bay Area has been a difficult place to build, including a complex maze of state and local regulations, very little suburban land available as vacant lots and an almost universal allergy to building more densely, BuildZoom Chief Economist Issi Romem said.
“Tough-to-build zip codes are all very high-demand spots in the sense that there is great willingness to pay for living there, but in which densification is not ‘acceptable,'” Romem said.
