In recent months, the City of San Jose has seen a great deal of multifamily development proposals. In one such proposal, developer Pacific Resources Stevenson is planning a mixed-use project along N. 1st Street with more than 500 residential units.

Located at 1737 N. 1st Street, the project would offer a mix of unit types, including studio, one and two-bedroom options. In total, residential space would equal 433,400 square feet. The project also proposes a parking structure with space for 620 vehicles and 10,471 square feet of amenity space.

Designs for the project come from Steinberg Hart. While still in the preliminary design stages, early renderings for the project depict two ten-level towers over garage podiums connected by central tenant amenity spaces.

The property is located on about 3.4 acres of land and is currently developed with a parking lot and a commercial office building totaling more than 150,000 square feet. According to project plans, the office building would remain onsite, with the residential development situated in place of the parking lot.

Should the project receive approval from the San Jose City Council, it would join a number of other major housing developments planned for the city. Most recently, a 14-story tower at 860 West San Carlos Road in San Jose’s Sunol-Midtown neighborhood was approved by the City Council. The project, which has been named The Ohlone will be developed by two San Jose-based real estate firms – Swenson and Republic Urban Properties – and will include 263 apartment units and 13,000 square feet of retail space.

The San Jose City Council also recently approved a 689-unit development at 254 McEvoy Street. which is set to bring much-needed housing inventory to downtown. Located on a 5.4-acre parcel of land, the residential space will be developed across two five-story buildings.

Additional developments remain in the planning stages. One planned project includes a 345-unit housing development at  905 N. Capitol Avenue. The project, which has been proposed by Houston-based The Hanover Co. and would include a multifamily building, 3,000 square feet of office space and 32 for-sale townhomes.
